Since my last blog post, I have attempted contact with most of my list of potentials. I found out rather quickly that I should have had an elevator pitch ready before even starting, because one called me less than 5 minutes after receiving an email. Fortunately, I think i did well in securing a meetup in that scenario. The advice I give here would be to just be as honest and genuine as possible. You’re not looking to network, you’re not looking to sell anything, that’s what salespeople do. You’re looking to make friends, because a friend is far better to have than just another connection.
So far I’ve set up 2 meetings for this week, with 3 others still pending. Normally I’d advise to not stop lead generating, but in this case I’m going to wait another day because a lot of these businesses probably aren’t checking mail on the weekends and I don’t want to get swamped – I want to leave as much time as possible for each meeting to make friends.
- Have an elevator pitch ready
- Make friends not connections
- Don’t get too busy to spend extra time with people
